Petition to Southwark Council: Act on the Climate Emergency—Adopt a Plant-Based Policy

To: Southwark Council
From: Residents of the London Borough of Southwark

Subject: Request for Council Action on Plant-Based Food Policy

We, the undersigned residents of Southwark, call on the Council to take meaningful action on the climate emergency by implementing a comprehensive plant-based food policy. This policy would represent a clear and impactful step in reducing the borough’s environmental footprint, improving public health, and promoting sustainability across our community.

We request that Southwark Council adopt the following measures:

  1. Provide only plant-based food and drink at all internal Council meetings and events.

  2. Prioritise plant-based options in all Council-influenced food environments, including schools, leisure centres, and public cafés.

  3. Encourage plant-based diets borough-wide by removing meat and dairy advertising where possible and promoting the environmental and health benefits of plant-based eating.

Why we need to change:

Animal agriculture is the leading driver of climate change, deforestation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. Scientific consensus confirms that a shift towards plant-based diets is among the most effective actions that individuals and institutions can take to reduce environmental impact.

Southwark Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. This petition calls on elected representatives to follow through on that declaration with policies that reflect the scientific evidence and widespread public demand for change. Transitioning to plant-based catering is not only possible—it is a powerful statement of leadership, aligned with the health, well-being, and values of Southwark’s diverse population.

We urge the Council to act decisively and join the dozen other councils who have already made the change!
