The climate crisis is here. In the heatwaves of July 2022, London hit a record-breaking 40.3°C, with the busiest day for city fire brigades since the blitz. Wildfires tore through suburbs like Wennington, destroying homes and pushing emergency services to the brink. According to researchers around 370 Londoners died from heat-wave related causes. This wasnât just a warning â it was a glimpse of whatâs coming.
In 2021, flash floods submerged 14,000 homes, hospitals, and Tube stations. 1.5 million Londoners live within the Thames floodplain, which experts warn could be regularly flooded by 2030.Â
The crisis could also cause a mass cereal crop collapse within 20 years â triggering a global food crisis. London, a city of over 9 million reliant on imported crops, will not be spared.
Weâre calling on Mayor Sadiq Khan to show the leadership this moment demands.
Adopt fully plant-based catering for all internal meetings and events â as a bold, meaningful step in tackling climate breakdown.
Why it matters:
đ Animal agriculture causes 14.5% of global emissions
đ„ A plant-based food system means up to 61% fewer carbon emissions
đż It frees land, cleans air, restores biodiversity
But this isnât just about emissions â itâs about leadership.
By making this shift, Mayor Sadiq Khan and the London Assembly would send a clear message to cities, councils, schools, and institutions around the world: climate action can start with something as simple as whatâs on your plate.
As a key driver of the worldâs fossil fuel economy and the first city to declare a climate emergency, London has both the privilege and the responsibility to lead by example â to do something meaningful, visible, and urgent.
Weâll deliver this petition to Mayor Sadiq Khan and the London Assembly in October 2025. With your support, we will ask the mayor to commit to this pledge, and hold him to account on your behalf. Our institutions must urgently step up to protect our environment, and we need your help.
We ask for your address only because it is needed to validate the petition. Your information will not be shared elsewhere.
